Garden Update 5/30

Hi Gardeners!

Thanks for checking in with us and your patience while we get this blog going.

Our garden is looking very good for the beginning of the summer season, and we've survived the dual dangers of extra-busy schedules and a light frost over the Memorial Day Weekend.

All of our barrels are now planted!!!  Our goal going forward is to have the AHS Community watering, harvesting, and collaborating together in a casual, relaxed summer-time way on our little patch of green.

The Salsa Garden is fully planted now with tomatoes, green chiles, garlic, cilantro, oregano, and chives growing.  The only ingredient we were not able to get started on time was onions, so we will simply buy them or get them from someone else's garden (I know Needham's garden has a bunch!) when it comes time for our AHS salsa canning session in the fall.

Thanks to garden volunteer Jane Katz, we have additional shade-cloth and burlap for wind and sun protection.  We could still use a volunteer to help put up the bottom layer of burlap.

The Salad Project is going strong now and we actually have Spinach, Mesclun Salad Mix, and Arugula ready for some light harvesting.  Any of you volunteers who are helping out, feel free to graze a little off those barrels.  I've been munching on them as I water and they are beyond anything you could get at Durango's finest restaurants.

The Worm Composter has been moved up near the garden and we will soon be harvesting worm compost to fertilize and renew our planted barrel soil.  The afternoon this will occur will be THURSDAY, JUNE 3rd.  If you would like to sort some worms and see how worm compost is harvested and applied, come join us!  It should take from 1 to 2 hours.  Also, if we have any extra worms, they will be made available to actively participating AHS gardeners who are ready to start  own worm composting at home.
