GARDEN CLUB UPDATE- 5/7/12

Hi guys, lots going on in the Garden Club!

We are going to continue this week with

·        Mondays after school (planting),

·        Tuesdays at lunch and after school (worm project), and

·        Thursdays after school (planting,etc.)

·        Bring your grubby clothes and, if desired, gloves, as we are getting 'in the dirt' moving and digging up soil in pots, and planting.

Flower Project Planted!!!! This last Saturday we planted the flower planters in front of the school - thanks to the design and hard work of Emily Wieser! Emily is looking for a couple more "flower people" to help her water and maintain (pick off dead flowers, replace ailing plants, etc.) a couple of times a week for about 1/2 hour each time. If you're interested, contact Emily at geekersroock@gmail.com. Thanks also to our landlord Dan Hopper for donating 1/2 of the flowers!

Salsa Project: We have planted cilantro seeds and green onion seeds, but still need donations for onion and garlic sets to plant ASAP. I have our tomato seedlings at home but will be bringing them over to the school garden this week to keep under the awning outside Jessica's classroom. We will be needing to transplant them soon into the big pots.

Worm Project: Alot going on this Tuesday!!!! MEET this Tuesday at lunch in Jessica McCallum's classroom to participate as Steve Smith is going to help conduct a short lab on what the pH is in our worm bin, and also on used and unused coffee grounds, to be sure we can keep the pH within the range of 5 to 9 that our worms require!!!
Also we will be dividing the worms to create a new layer in our composter and harvesting some worm castings to put on our seedlings.

Thanks to Elizabeth Duncan for helping feed and start the Worm Log, as well as collaborate on the pH idea. Rachael Sands helped move the worms down to the garden area outside Jessica McCallums classroom, in case you are wondering where the worms are. We are hoping the nights are warm enough for them in this location.

Salad Project: We have started almost 20 pots now of salad ingredients, including peas, carrots, chard, lettuces, spinach, thyme, and edible sweet peas.

Watering We need students to sign up to water each day.... We have India and Robin for Mondays, and Marlene for Thursdays. Anyone else want to pick a day to water? It's more fun with two people, so ask your friends to help you. It can be during lunch or after school, we use John Fisher's sink. Just let Sharon know if you want to water and she will make arrangements to be there with the key to John's room if you want to do it after school. Jessica McCallum is helping keep things watered also. Sharon is watering on the weekends but would love another person to do it with.

Well, that's about it for now. Soon (date to be determined) we want to set the garden up in the parking lot and will be recruiting members for this activity.

Please let me know if I can add any of your friends/acquaintances to our email list!

Sharon
